WHAT IS PRINCE2 AGILE?

PRINCE2 Agile is a project management framework developed by PeopleCert that combines the PRINCE2 project management method with agile delivery approaches including Scrum, Kanban and Lean Startup.

The current version is PRINCE2 Agile Version 2, released in 2025. This version places greater emphasis on agile frameworks and their practical application, with additional guidance on choosing the right agile approach based on project needs.

PRINCE2 Agile is built on the same seven principles as PRINCE2. The difference is in how those principles are applied in an agile context. The framework provides guidance on how to tailor PRINCE2 for agile delivery while maintaining the governance and control that senior stakeholders require.

PRINCE2 Agile is compatible with a wide range of other agile methods. It can be applied alongside Scrum, Kanban, SAFe and other frameworks without conflict.

PRINCE2 AGILE VERSUS STANDARD AGILE

Many organisations use agile methods like Scrum or Kanban for delivery. These frameworks are excellent for managing iterative, incremental development. But they have limitations at the project governance level.

Scrum tells you how to run a sprint. It does not tell you how to justify the project to a board. It does not tell you how to manage dependencies between projects. It does not tell you how to report progress to a senior stakeholder who needs to make a funding decision.

PRINCE2 Agile addresses all of these gaps. It provides the governance layer that agile delivery methods do not cover. The result is a framework that gives teams the flexibility to work in agile ways while giving senior stakeholders the visibility and control they need.

PRINCE2 AGILE VERSUS STANDARD PRINCE2

Standard PRINCE2 is a powerful project management framework. But it was originally designed for environments where delivery is sequential and predictable. In modern project environments, delivery is often iterative, incremental and uncertain.

PRINCE2 Agile extends PRINCE2 to work effectively in these environments. It does not replace PRINCE2. It adds guidance on how to apply PRINCE2 principles and practices in an agile context.

Flexing what is delivered In agile delivery, scope is flexible within agreed boundaries. The MoSCoW prioritisation method is used to define what must be delivered, what should be delivered, what could be delivered and what will not be delivered this time.

Frequent releases Agile delivery focuses on releasing value frequently and incrementally rather than delivering everything at the end. This gives stakeholders early visibility of progress and allows them to provide feedback that shapes future delivery.

Rich communication Agile teams communicate in person and frequently. They use visual management tools like boards and burn down charts to make progress visible to everyone.

Collaboration Agile teams work closely with customers and stakeholders throughout delivery. Requirements are refined continuously based on feedback rather than fixed at the start.

Learning Agile teams inspect and adapt continuously. They hold retrospectives to identify what is working and what needs to change. They use this learning to improve continuously throughout the project.

THE FOUNDATION EXAM

The PRINCE2 Agile Foundation exam tests your knowledge and understanding of the PRINCE2 Agile framework.

Format: 50 multiple choice questions. Duration: 60 minutes. Pass mark: 55 percent. 28 correct answers out of 50. Closed book. No reference materials permitted. Delivery: Online with a live PeopleCert proctor.

The questions test whether you understand the principles, practices and processes of PRINCE2 Agile and can identify correct applications of the framework in an agile context.

WHO IS PRINCE2 AGILE FOUNDATION FOR?

If you already hold PRINCE2 Foundation, preparation for PRINCE2 Agile Foundation is typically shorter as many of the underlying principles are shared.

If you are new to both PRINCE2 and agile, allow more time to understand both frameworks before combining them.

Most candidates prepare in four to six weeks of consistent study, dedicating one to two hours per day.
