WHAT IS PRINCE2 AGILE PRACTITIONER?

PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner builds on Foundation by testing your ability to apply and tailor the PRINCE2 Agile framework to real project scenarios.

Where Foundation tests knowledge and understanding, Practitioner tests application and judgement. You are given a project scenario and asked to demonstrate how you would apply PRINCE2 Agile in that context.

This reflects how the framework is actually used. Agile projects are dynamic. Requirements evolve. Priorities shift. The governance structure needs to flex without losing control. Practitioner tests whether you can navigate that complexity using the framework.

To sit the Practitioner exam you must already hold PRINCE2 Agile Foundation certification. Foundation is the prerequisite.

WHAT DOES PRACTITIONER TEST?

PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner tests your ability to:

Apply the PRINCE2 Agile framework to a real project scenario. Tailor the framework appropriately for the agile context of the project. Demonstrate how to balance governance and control with agile flexibility. Apply the five targets of PRINCE2 Agile in context. Make informed decisions about how to manage the interface between PRINCE2 governance and agile delivery. Identify appropriate agile behaviours, concepts and techniques for the project scenario.

The questions are scenario based. You are given a project context at the start of the exam and all questions relate to that scenario. You need to understand the project situation well enough to make the right calls about how to apply the framework.

APPLYING PRINCE2 AGILE IN PRACTICE

At Practitioner level you move beyond theory into real application. Here are some of the situations PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner prepares you for.

Managing scope flexibility In a traditional project, scope is fixed. In an agile project, scope is flexible within agreed boundaries. Practitioner prepares you to use MoSCoW prioritisation to manage what gets delivered, in what order, and what gets deferred if time or budget runs out.

Governing sprints and iterations Agile delivery happens in sprints or iterations. PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner prepares you to integrate sprint governance with project stage governance. How do sprints fit within stages? How does the project board get visibility of sprint progress without being involved in every daily standup?

Managing the customer relationship Agile delivery requires close collaboration with the customer. But how do you manage that relationship within a formal project governance structure? Practitioner prepares you to navigate the interface between the agile team and the project board.

Reporting in an agile environment Traditional project reporting can feel heavy in an agile environment. Practitioner prepares you to use agile reporting tools like information radiators and burn down charts alongside formal PRINCE2 reporting mechanisms. The goal is to give senior stakeholders the visibility they need in a format that fits the agile way of working.

Managing risk in an agile context Risk management looks different in an agile environment. Requirements change. Priorities shift. New information emerges constantly. Practitioner prepares you to apply PRINCE2 risk management principles in a way that complements agile delivery rather than slowing it down.

Tailoring governance for the agile context Not every PRINCE2 governance mechanism is appropriate for every agile project. Practitioner prepares you to make sensible tailoring decisions. Which stage gates are needed? Which reports can be simplified? Which roles can be combined? How do you maintain the principles without burdening the team with unnecessary process?

THE PRACTITIONER EXAM

The PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner exam tests your ability to apply the framework to a real project scenario.

Format: Objective testing questions based on a project scenario. Duration: 150 minutes. Pass mark: 55 percent. Open book. You may use the official PRINCE2 Agile manual during the exam. Delivery: Online with a live PeopleCert proctor.

The open book format does not make the exam easy. There is not enough time to look everything up. You need to know the framework well enough to navigate the manual quickly and apply it accurately to the scenario.

Read the scenario carefully before you begin. Understanding the project context is essential to answering the questions correctly.

WHO IS PRINCE2 AGILE PRACTITIONER FOR?

PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner is for project management professionals who work in agile environments and want to demonstrate they can apply PRINCE2 Agile governance in practice.

It is particularly valuable for:

Project managers leading agile projects who need to demonstrate governance capability alongside agile delivery skills. Scrum Masters and agile coaches moving into project management roles. Senior project professionals working in organisations transitioning from traditional to agile delivery. Anyone who has completed PRINCE2 Agile Foundation and wants the full certification. Project professionals working in government or large organisations where agile delivery must coexist with formal project governance.

Practitioner certification is valid for three years. After three years you can renew by retaking the exam, taking a further qualification within the PRINCE2 portfolio, or collecting CPD points through PeopleCert membership.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PREPARE?

Preparation time depends on your prior experience with both PRINCE2 Agile Foundation and practical agile delivery.

If you have significant experience working on agile projects, the Practitioner preparation may feel more natural as you are applying knowledge to familiar situations.

If you are less experienced with agile delivery in practice, allow more time to work through scenario based questions and build your confidence in applying the framework.

Most candidates prepare in four to six weeks after completing Foundation, dedicating one to two hours per day.

The key is practising scenario based questions. Do not just re-read the manual. Work through practice papers. Get used to reading a project scenario and identifying how the framework applies.
