PRINCE2 vs PMP project management certification comparison infographic

PRINCE2 vs PMP. Which Project Management Certification is Right for You?

INTRODUCTION

Two certifications dominate the project management profession. PRINCE2 and PMP.

Both are globally recognised. Both are respected by employers. Both demonstrate that you understand how projects are supposed to be managed.

But they are not the same qualification. They test different things. They suit different people. And they are more valuable in different parts of the world.

This post gives you the honest comparison. No sales pitch. No fluff. Just the information you need to make the right decision for your career.

WHAT IS PRINCE2?

PRINCE2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments) is a structured project management framework developed in the UK and now used in more than 150 countries worldwide.

It is the de facto standard for project management in the UK, Europe, Australia and many other countries. It is particularly dominant in government, public sector and large enterprise environments.

PRINCE2 is owned by PeopleCert and is currently in its seventh version, released in 2023.

PRINCE2 is built around seven principles, seven practices and seven processes. It provides a complete, coherent framework for governing and controlling projects from start to finish.

PRINCE2 has two levels of certification. Foundation tests your knowledge of the framework. Practitioner tests your ability to apply it.

WHAT IS PMP?

PMP (Project Management Professional) is a certification offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It is based on the PMBOK Guide (Project Management Body of Knowledge) and tests a broad range of project management knowledge and experience.

PMP is particularly dominant in North America and is widely recognised globally. It is more common in the private sector and in multinational organisations than PRINCE2.

PMP has a significant experience requirement. To sit the PMP exam you need at least three years of project management experience (or five years without a four year degree) and 35 hours of project management education.

PRINCE2 has no experience requirement. Anyone can sit the Foundation exam.

THE KEY DIFFERENCES

Framework versus body of knowledge

PRINCE2 is a framework. It tells you exactly how to manage a project. It defines specific roles, specific documents, specific processes and specific decision points. It is prescriptive in structure but flexible in application.

PMP is based on a body of knowledge. It covers a broad range of project management approaches, tools and techniques. It does not prescribe a specific way of managing projects. It tests whether you know the range of options available and when to apply them.

Experience requirement

PRINCE2 has no experience requirement. You can sit Foundation with no prior project management experience.

PMP requires significant documented project management experience. This makes it more appropriate for experienced project managers who want to formalise and validate their knowledge.

Geographic relevance

PRINCE2 is dominant in the UK, Europe, Australia, the Middle East and many other regions. If you work in the UK public sector or central government, PRINCE2 is effectively the standard qualification.

PMP is dominant in North America and is well recognised globally. If you work for a multinational or are targeting roles in the US or Canada, PMP may carry more weight.

Cost

PRINCE2 Foundation exam costs approximately £543 through PeopleCert directly. Practitioner costs approximately £604. Through Prepare2Lead you can get both for less.

PMP exam costs $405 for PMI members and $555 for non members. There are also costs for the required education hours and study materials.

Renewal

PRINCE2 certifications are valid for three years and can be renewed by retaking the exam, taking a further qualification or collecting CPD points through PeopleCert membership.

PMP certification requires 60 PDUs (Professional Development Units) every three years to maintain.

WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

The honest answer depends on where you are, where you want to go and what kind of projects you work on.

Choose PRINCE2 if:

You work in the UK, Europe, Australia or the Middle East. You work in government, public sector or large enterprise environments. You are earlier in your project management career and want a structured framework to build on. You want a certification with no experience prerequisite. You work in an organisation that uses or requires PRINCE2.

Choose PMP if:

You work in North America or for a multinational organisation. You have significant project management experience and want to validate it. You work across multiple methodologies and want a broader knowledge certification. Your target employers specifically ask for PMP.

Choose both if:

You want maximum global recognition. You work across different regions and sectors. You want to demonstrate the broadest possible project management knowledge and capability.

CAN YOU HOLD BOTH?

Yes. Many experienced project management professionals hold both PRINCE2 and PMP. They complement each other well. PRINCE2 gives you a structured governance framework. PMP gives you broad methodological knowledge.

If you are earlier in your career, start with PRINCE2 Foundation. It is accessible, affordable and gives you a solid foundation to build on. You can always add PMP later as your experience grows.

SUMMARY

PRINCE2 and PMP are both excellent certifications. The right choice depends on your location, your experience level and your target employers.

For UK based project management professionals, PRINCE2 is the clear starting point. It is the standard. It is what employers expect. And it is what senior stakeholders respect.

For experienced professionals targeting global or North American roles, PMP adds significant value alongside PRINCE2.

Start where you are. Build from there. And choose the certification that opens the doors you actually want to walk through.
